Maddison Kitching (born 1989) is an artist based in Naarm/Melbourne. Since childhood, he has been fascinated with reptiles and amphibians, an interest which has expanded to Australia’s unique wildlife - manifested in his art practice today. He uses painting, collage and sculpture to assist him to understand human and animal relationships. Recent projects have reflected on; the role of animal symbols in shaping national psyche, the use of live animals in political diplomacy and the commodification of place as perpetuated through the tourism industry. The mini ‘Big Things’ are minute replicas of The Big Galah, located in Kimba, South Australia and The Giant Murray Cod, located in Swan Hill, Victoria. ‘Big Things’ serve as tourist destinations and have the alluring potential of putting towns on the map. These works explore their larger-than-life presence within the landscape and their connection to the real-life creatures they are based upon.
